How did you get into BJJ?

I got into the martial arts the same way a lot of people my age did: I saw Bruce Lee and I wanted to be just like him. My parents never really wanted me to get into martial arts as a kid, though, as they thought it would encourage me to fight. So I just watched movies, read books, and dreamed of defeating a room full of thugs with my nunchucku. I decided to find a place to start training. Luckily for me, I knew a friend and he introduced me to a Jeet Kune Do club , so I jumped right in and joined up. Working with them led me to quite a few schools in Singapore, where I trained for several years. It was great, we trained a bit of everything – boxing, Muay Thai , Jun Fan, kali, silat, sambo, kyokushin karate , judo, hakka kuen , freestyle-wrestling, shootwrestling, and traditional jiu-jitsu. So I got exposed to a lot of ideas and styles. There was very little sparring or live rolling, however, so while I learned a lot, the timing under pressure just wasn’t there.

I gravitated towards jiu-jitsu and JKD, and I started training at another gym as well. This gym was not affiliate to any clubs, and it was there I really got baptized in the jiu-jitsu fires… I quickly learned that all the leglocks and neck cranks in the world don’t help you if you can’t escape the side control of a seasoned jiu-jitsu practitioner. It was really tough…I got pretty discouraged at one point and actually gave it up for a few months. But the love of jiu-jitsu I had developed was deeper than the frustration, and when I went back, I found some very encouraging training partners who helped me through that period. Since then I have moved around the country a good bit and been at many different gyms, and I’m happy to say that I’ve never had to take more than a week or two off from training.

Reflections after SERVECAMBODIA !

Before the trip , I was full of mixed emotions – both excited and afraid.
Excited as in I haven’t been to a less developed country before , If I manage to get there , what would I do and blah blah
Afraid as in I have no idea what to expect there – like the unknown especially the food.

Never did I know it was such a learning journey for me.

Especially the lack of painters part , I had to do the honours and I managed to finished it despite it being mentally tough for me .
I MISS THEM , haizz , back to school then ….

Went for the T-NET X- challenge race at Chinese Garden in the morning .
Was soooooooooo fun (:
We were enthrusted to look after 3 long poles whereby the runners have to jump over it and their response when they attempt to jump was simply exhilarating.
After that , I went over to help dex with the canoe kids ,
He said I was the snake man ! :D
Finished the event with A TROPHY ! :D

Alright a bit bored , so blog again.

Today morning lessons , tried strenously to keep awake and had physics sub in the afternn ,

Hakka Kuntao .
(Southern Chinese Martial Arts of the Hakka people)

Hakka Kuntao or Hakka Kuen, is a generic term for all the martial arts systems created and developed by the Hakka people, mostly in the southern Chinese provinces of Fujian and Guangdong.

Put it simply, the Hakka are one of the ethnic Han groups in southern China (just like the Hokkienese and the Cantonese), who had migrated from central China ( Henan province) to the southern part of the country. In China, everybody knows the Hakka were soldiers and militaries in the past, and they've always been famous for their fighting skills. Lots of famous heros, warriors and leaders were from Hakka origin like Guan Yu, Yao Fei, Lin Biao, but also Hong Xiuquan leader of the Taiping rebellion, Sun Yatsen, Deng Xiaoping, Li Peng or Lee Kwan yew, former prime minister of Singapore .

Lots of famous martial arts masters were Hakka as well. The most well-known is, with no doubt, Yip Man who was Bruce Lee's instructor and the first Wing Chun master to teach the style to non-Hakka.

Hakka styles can be recognized by some typical characteristics, here are few of them: The elbows stay inside, the back is rounded, the chest is empty, and of course, the famous Hakka way forming the fist: Fong g'Nan Kun (phoenix eye fist). Most Hakka styles are close range fighting styles.

Here is a list of the main Hakka styles:

- PAK MEI Kung Fu of the Taoist monk « White eyebrows »

- WING CHUN Eternal Spring Kung Fu

- CHU KA Chu family Kung Fu

- DI KA Di family Kung Fu

- LAU KA Liu family Kung Fu

- LI KA Li family Kung Fu

In the martial arts world, most people have heard of the famous Hakka styles, but there is very few information about them. Some, who practice the most common of the Hakka Kuntao like Wing Chun or white crane, don't even know they practice a Hakka style?

The fighting styles of the Hakka people have influenced (one could even say saved) the northern and southern Shaolin boxing, respectively in the 16 th and 18 th century, the martial arts of South-East Asian (like Silat, Kali, Mauy Thai, etc.), and of course, are at the origin of Japanese Karate via Fujian and Okinawa (most Karate styles come from Fujian Hakka White Crane Kung Fu: Bak Hok Kun).

Thanks to the tradition of the Hakka families to be so mysterious and secretive, Hakka Kung Fu were protected from modernization and from the destructive cultural revolution. Since Mao's troops didn't even know about the Hakka masters, therefore they couldn't kill nor destroy them. Nowadays and unfortunately, almost all Kung Fu schools turned into sport (modern wushu), but the HAKKA KUN are probably the last authentic and traditional Chinese Martial Arts.

Walked along Mount Veron Road at early night . HENG!

1st is the S. P . C . A

There are a lot of van park just outside there and they are all immobile . there is no sidewalks for you to walk , you have to walk near the side of the roads . There was little barking of dogs at night , which really surprised me though .

2nd is the guard post of the gurkha contingent .
With the guards outside and the common shouting is enough to instill fear in you .
and outside there are no landmarks , only a highway with no cars zooming past AND IT IS REALLY A STEEEEEEP SLOPE UP THE HILL .
There are no buses , no cars , no bangala trucks , nothing .

While happily walking up a few metres , I stumble on a tree branch , and I fell down on my face flat , the moment I stood up and tilted my head to the left , IT WAS A COLUMBARIUM and nobody was around , I SAW HUNDREDS OF FACES LOOKING AT ME , it was like a feeling being watched . MY GOD .

I stood up and continued walking and kept telling myself , don't look back , don't look back .

I arrived near the outside of Maris Stella High School . WOW , npcc 10 years of consecutive gold unit award .

As I walked deeper and deeper , I took a short cut and cut through vernon park road .
Totally regretted my decision , It was a muslim cemetery , then I was seriously lost , and I walked and walked .

At the moment , I was cursing the bus uncle , say must cut through the Maris Stella High to get to the MRT side . Saw a Mosque along the way . Its name was Bidadari Mosque.

I realised that my NCOs are the best! =)

They woke me up from my slumber

At the same time , I learnt what I was supposed to do and what not to do.

Due to my lack of sensible judgement & playfulness , I never fail to get into serious trouble back at my unit.

Whether if its insults or disrespect ,

COMBINED UG CAMP'09 REFLECTIONS
The post is quite long. Bear with me. ;x
Second week over , idk if there should be anything I shld be proud of or being rejoice over.>< tough times don't last tough man do.

I did change for the better during this year's UG Camp and what happened last year did not repeat.
But smt happened during the 2nd night tt really got me reflecting .
I promised Dave I would only run on the 1st night, the nite I was tekan-ed before, but I broke the deal apparently and ran somemore.
I felt kinda weird though , It wasn't as sore as last year's
'cause I kept running and running.
Firstly ,
Its not that i dun wanna get over it
but its just that I can't get over it.

I sincerely believe that everyone has his own expectation on himself
and not forgetting others around him.

& i truly believe that my own expectation of myself will definately be higher than others.

Secondly ,
I'm utterly dissapointed with the UG's attitude , the OIC was a lady and she had to scream and shout , yet they wouldn't listen.
In the end , she suffered overbreathing
I mean as a UG ,
what is this?
Is this the way to behave?

Yet , when smt happen , nobody cared and continued the campfire like nobodies business.

Back to my point
Thus , that resulted in
my expectations with ppl around me
will
directly or indirectly
increase

With all these high expectation around , its inevitable that I would be disappointed with myself.
It makes me really ponder?

Why do people choose to do this thing
but they don't put in their 100% in doing it.

The campfire prep and everything was indeed stressful for me , as our facs are always unavailable and I HAD to be given the task of leading almost throughout the camp.

I indirectly became one of the facs.

I could do btr , minus all the unneccesary name-calling ,fooling around , laughing , wasting precious and crucial time that I had " contributed "
Im sorry facs , for wasting everyone's time.

Ug camp was 80% successful.
tt how I would rate it if u were to ask me.
its not perfection.
neither was it a failure.

I believe that in every camp
there will always be setbacks.
We need to be flexible when problems occurs.
Well Done , Red Cross , I saw through all your perserverance and hard work , tt I decided to do a skip quite different frm the others , during the campfire.

After Npap, I actually have the guts to attend weekly training.

I USED to drag myself to hta , now I drag myself to weekly training.

Im lagging alot behind wif the WOC.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.

Yesterday I dared to struggle.

Today I dare to win.

Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things, I am tempted to think there are no little things.

To make dreams real, first you have to have them.

I am only one. But still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.

If one dream should fall and break into a thousand pieces, never be afraidto pick up the pieces and try again.
Like the 40plus rounds late at nite wif countless ppl looking at you.

It was utter hell and I detest it .

In the end , I learnt smt important.
Dead ends are illusory.

When did you ever let a 'Do not enter' sign keep you away from anything?Go around the brick walls.When you cannot go around climb over or dig under.

I went to learn abit abit abit of the Sizing command.
But I found out it was getting useless at HTA..
When it was abit different
I went to Hta for my annual parade training..
Super nervous..
The Field inspector was in front of me and teaching me how to do the marchpast.
C.I. was right in front of me..
I was the 1st right marker to do the belok..
It was my honour to be able to lead the parade at the unity square..
Lucky me , I saw ACS Barker cadets on the way to the ration..
But didnt go wif them..

Den rushed to Newton and alighted to take Bus 700A
Den I rushed to the concert..

All things that live must die.
Man alone, it seems lives all his life in the denial of death.
To live, one might say, is to accept death.
Yet there is more to life than merely waiting for death.
For life to have meaning there must be a purpose.

For some, that purpose revolves around marriage and children that will carry on their seeds.
For others it is an ideal - a dream.
And now I ask myself this question…
